Peacemakers provides ADR training both to its members and to members of the public who may be interested in learning the skills. These skills can be used either for doing ADR or in everyday situations where a conflict may develop.

The Four Levels of Peacemaker Training
1) Basic Conflict Resolution Skills
2) ADR Approaches/Methods
3) ADR Practicum
4) Trainer

(The Level 1&2 course are each approximately 10-12 hours long. They are generally given either on weekends or in the evenings, depending on the availability of instructors and the schedules of the participants. Certificates are provided at the completion of each level. The courses are given at cost, presently less than $50 per course.

1)  The Basic Conflict Resolution Skills Course  provides the essential tools needed for conflict resolution facilitators, or for anyone involved in a conflict situation. These include such matters as handling emotions, communication skills, developing options for resolution, etc. Many people take this course by itself for their own personal development and do not proceed to the next levels that deal with ADR skills.

2)  The ADR Approaches/Methods   develop the negotiation skills of the participants and teach  the essentials of the mediation, circle conferencing and consensus building.

3)  The ADR Practicum, involves participants who have completed the earlier two levels with the Society, or equivalent training from another source. These participants go out and do actual ADR with an experienced ADR facilitator. They will normally be doing co-facilitations with the other facilitator, in a minor role at the beginning and doing the major role at the end. Hopefully, the Society then has another volunteer to provide Peacemaker services. However, no such commitment is required in order to take the courses.

4)  The Trainer is the final training level.  When participants feel comfortable they will begin co-training with an instructor.  After it is apparent that the co-instructor knows and understands the material and learns appropriate teaching techniques they are able to run the training sessions on their own.  Orientation with additional material and familiarity with additional resource material  is studied.  At this point they are able to train level 3 participants in actual ADR sessions.
